What if school wasn’t compulsory?
What if kids could come if they wanted to learn, and do something else if they didn’t?
What if students could choose their own curriculum?
What if my brother, who loved to take apart electronic gadgets the day after he got them, had been offered a course in electronics? Would he have stayed on to learn valuable electronic nuggets instead of dropping out?
What if there were no standardized tests?
What if each student could develop his or her own natural abilities?
What if students could follow their own natural curiosities?
What if learning were truly valued for what it is?
What if I could go up on the roof with my students one day to write poems about clouds?
What if I didn’t go home at the end of the work day to hear talk radio bashing me about what a bad job I’m doing?
What if there were time in my life for me, the teacher, to learn things that really fire me up? Would I be a better teacher for this?
What if we didn’t define knowledge so narrowly?
What if we didn’t have to prostitute ourselves to Pepsi Co. for equipment to do our jobs?
What if Americans were as excited about learning new things as they are about NFL football?
What if people didn’t look down on me in social situations for being a teacher?
What if doctors were treated the way teachers are treated?
