I hear so much about the achievement gap, which is real and serious. But what I don’t hear anyone talking about are the gaping gaps that underlie the achievement gap such as these:

1. The growing gap between the rich and the poor.

2. The gap between the average household spending on technology and schools’ spending on technology.

3. The gap between my own standard of living and that of my similarly educated peers as we age.

4. The gap between the standards this generation is held to compared to the standards their parents were expected to meet, mentioned here.

5. The gap between 3:30 and 6:00, when too many teenagers are unsupervised at home. (I have a student pregnant with her second baby now.)
