The worst thing anyone can do is lead people to take some authority, any authority, over the authority of Jesus. Sounds like another Christian cliché — I know. But, like everything in the Christian faith, this is trickier than it looks. It’s actually easier for the church to slip over into becoming the idol of Christians than it is for “the world” to do so. But it is no less an idol. And it’s worse for Christians because we have a responsibility to tell the truth, and we go around telling everyone else that we have it all figured out.
