The authority with which some Christians claim to have this thing all figured out is also extremely suspect. Seriously. In any other sphere, the Christian himself would acknowledge this. Anyone who comes up promising you a get-rich-quick scheme is full of shit. It can’t be that simple.

Thinking people have found that life is a lot harder and the questions more complex than their story-book, Vacation Bible School, “Jesus loves the little children” religious upbringing led them to believe. They grew up and found things complicated. This isn’t some defect in those people. That’s the way it’s supposed to be. Kindergarten faith only works for kindergarteners. Animated vegetables don’t have all the answers.

But in America today, when the thinking man finds life complex, there aren’t enough Christians around who have grown out of their Kindergarten Christianity to offer an example of what mature Christianity looks like. So the thinking adult skeptic meets primarily with Christians so afraid to ask an honest question of their faith and their Lord that it stunted their growth. Spiritual, emotional, intellectual growth. The thinking man concludes, on the word of the Christians themselves, that this playschool faith is what Christianity is and tries to be honest in stating he can’t accept that belief system. He is closer to god, I suspect, than the Christian who tries to suppress his or her own mind, afraid to ask a question.

Sandalstraps has a much more interesting blog entry on this than mine.
