Fun with BlogRush

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I’m so new to the blogosphere that I’m hesitant to write this post because I’m nobody to be talking about how to gain traffic. I didn’t even know about the supposed “hype” for BlogRush until it launched. But that’s the point of my post. Nothing wrong with being ignorant. But there is something wrong with refusing to admit ignorance or staying that way due to laziness or being afraid to ask questions.

I honestly believe that all true learning is the result of effort and questioning on the part of the learner. This is, according to the current educational establishment in America, anathema to say.  But I have to ask myself “What Would Slim Shady Do?”  He’d say it anyway.

So here goes. Students learn, under the direction of a creative & insightful teacher, because of what they themselves do, think, ask. There is no such thing as learning by osmosis.  This is what is wrong with the “edutainment” approach we are forced to take in the classroom. Learning is, in point of fact, fun.   But only if the learner is engaged.

So let’s have some fun with BlogRush.

Darren’s post at ProBlogger, “How Not Throwing the Baby Out With the Bathwater Earned Me Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars, got me thinking. This is a chance to learn more about blogging, so that’s how I’m going to approach it even if it doesn’t bring me one single visitor.

When I don’t know where to start with a topic, I ususally start asking questions, so here are some of mine:

1.  How can I write better headlines to attract more click-throughs?

2. Do I need to move my widget up higher on the page?

3. Am I appropriately categorized?

4. My blog is not niched enough, what should I do?

5. What can we, the BlogRushers, do to help make it better?

6. Why do I have negative credit balance?

7. Is it rude to do “invites” to other bloggers?

8. Are we expecting too much of BlogRush? (This blog isn’t even monetized, as I consider it a training blog, so I’m not really expecting anything except to learn about blogging.)

What are your thoughts on this? We should be proactive in order to make the most of this thing.  Let’s talk about it….

    Hi Taylor
I have been blurking your blog for about 2 weeks now - came across it via another blog on another blog etc etc. I love your honesty and find your blogs provoking…all the way down here in Australia.
I too am an English teacher…hope we can share some ideas…my blog was set up to satisfy the requirements of a rather dull unit I am doing at Uni…

I’m so glad! I had to look up “blurking” because I’m so new!

But your comment was cut off, and that link above can’t be right. It’s something to do with a porn search engine.

That’s why I edited your link out. If you’ll email me a corrected link, I’ll be happy to fix it and put your link back!

    Hey Taylor,

Thanks for the very nice comments about my blog. I’m new, as well. Very encouraging, thank you. I am creating a blogroll and will add your blog. very good.

I meant to say re. this post. I have the same questions.

Hopefully someone will show up to this blog, or elsewhere, and answer them! (especially the one about negative credits — I think there’s a lot on the net about headlines and niches already, I just don’t seem to have it down yet.)

If you find some info, please leave a comment here so we can share data!

Thanks for reading and participating. This is pretty fun!
