I really enjoyed Buher’s post about why we teach. We do teach for the sweethearts in Geometry 9. And for the cutie who asked me whether or not people could see in color in the era of black and white films.
And the beautiful, energetic, talkative, bubbly freshman cheerleader in my second period who, today, was clearly not her usual self. I talked to her in the media center today about high school. (Yet another advantage to the distributed, self-directed learning that technology allows! Everyone writing, thinking, learning AND time to bond and try to help a student on a personal level. Yay.)
It’s been a while since I’ve worked with freshmen. I had forgotten how hard this is for them. We talked about priorities, and time management, and growing as a person, and seeking first to understand then to be understood. And parents. I probably talked too much and listened too little, in retrospect. Overeager to help, I think. I will try to talk to her again soon and listen more.
Writing this post has made me realize that the only piece of educational jargon that has never sounded like bullshit to me is this one:
reflective practitioner
