They all do. But here’s why today’s meeting was bad:
1. We were given a Target gift certificate for Christmas and then immeidately asked to donate it. The needs are legitimate, but I need my gift certificate because I had to cut all the lights off my tree last year. They were too tangled to take them off. Then we just threw them out. So, I really wanted that twenty five bucks for tree lights, since we’re very broke this year.
2. One of our APs annouced that she is leaving. I am really sorry for her because she was sick, very very sick, last year. But that doesn’t change the fact that she’s a bitch who lied on me to my face in service of some bullshit agenda from the administration. This was several years ago, but I have never trusted her since. I’m sorry she was sick, but I’m glad she’s leaving.
3. Our principal told us today that our high school has the worst teacher attendance in the district. It was sad, but funny because everyone with two brain cells to rub together in that room knows exactly why attendance is down. In case you’re not a regular reader I’ll sum up: it’s because working there is a unique form of hell and many teachers can’t get themselves together to “soldier” it when they’re even a little sick.
4. Before the meeting a friend of mine was called to a “meeting” with an AP (a different one.) She’s getting a letter in her file, in part because of attendance. Second one this year. She and said admin were both late to the faculty meeting, of course, and before she came in another friend asked me, “Do you think this is bad?” I said, “Meetings with admin are NEVER good. Period.”
So, the “Merry Christmas” meeting had the following effects:
1. I’m selfish.
2. I’m also heartless and wicked for being glad that two-faced meanie head is leaving.
3. Admin is completely out of touch with the reality of how horrible it really is to work for them.
4. Any one of us could be next.
I drove home cursing out loud at the Gestapo atmosphere of that place.
Merry Christmas.

Sometimes I wish I had gone the anonymous route.

Hey, our new principal started pulling teachers in questioning their absences.
Two weeks ago, our Assistant Superintendent distributed a ‘climate survey’ to our staff.
Can you say, ’see ya’ later, alligator’?
Again, move to PA!

Climate survey? Like to determine the climate of the school? And you think someone will listen? and respond? wow!
Dan - why?

It’s tough to find this kind of catharsis when several members of your department and a few dozen of your students stop by your blog now and then.

Listen??? Oh, they’re listening…in fact, they started the wheels of intervention days before the distribution of the survey.
The survey was just the proverbial icing on the principal.

She is okay, as far as I know. She said she was taking a break b/c the ordeal (over now) was harrowing and hard on her and her family. But I think she is well.
