Almost Humbug

This has been a strange Christmas. We usually get our tree around Thanksgiving, but a combination of budgetary concerns and various illnesses has put it off until today.

We were going to get the tree yesterday, but the weather was un*bear*able. Totally overcast, freezing. Raining. We just stayed in bed.

It was FREEZING. And our house doesn’t have central heat. So we heat with space heaters, which works fine most of the time, but shit. Yesterday sucked. Clean the kitchen? Get outside and buy a tree? No way.

Yesterday I was totally down with the program of staying where it was warm. Today, we went to buy a tree and there was nothing left. I was mad. I’ve never attempted to buy a tree on December 16 before, so I was unprepared for this wrench in my plans. There was precisely ONE noble fir left at the Home Depot. Had to go to a tree lot across the street, which didn’t take debit cards and didn’t cut the branches off the bottom. And had maybe 4 or 5 short-ass trees left.

I bought two. At least they were cheap.

I have TONS of ornaments, and as it was only 11 a.m., I was still optimistic about this tree situation.

Now it’s almost seven, and after learning much about male and female connectors and re-stringing the lights on this tree THREE times and two different I’m getting discouraged.

But I’m pressing on.

We’re just going to finish string the lights (for the THIRD time) then pick up the house, fold the laundry, and get ready for the week. I don’t know when all the other decorations will go up. Hopefully before Christmas.

Today has been a headache. But I LOVE Christmas. I’m not going to let today bleed into tomorrow.

But I knew this sound file would come in handy at some point. I recorded this two weeks ago. It seems to fit now. It’s short, like 5 seconds. Play it.

Merry Christmas.

Go plastic with the tree and never look back, I say. My kids reckon the one we’ve got this year looks alright - and the main thing is that it has the wrapped gifts underneath.

I’ll never go plastic! (doesn’t everyone say that?) I don’t think Taylor can go plastic before she’s ready.

    Like quitting smoking.
