Windows of the Skull: Sunday

~~ I love Allen Ginsberg’s Howl. So many interesting turns of phrase. But I’ve only just discovered it. I once assigned Ginsberg to a 9th grader and his mother had a fit. Oops. “Windows of the Skull” came from that poem, which I title this post because it’s more like a Twitter bomb than a post. It’s just some random things I saw through the windows of my skull today.

~~ I love when the birds start calling one another home at the end of the day. Mommy birds are calling the kids inside. Reminds me of summer evenings.

~~ Tupac’s music is intense. It’s not music for putting on in the background and bouncing to, although it’s good for that too, so the power of his expression can get lost if you don’t pay attention. Take “Battle of a Dead Souljah,” for instance. It needs to be heard one word at a time. Loud. Without distractions. In his voice. Don’t sing, just listen. Do it now. If you don’t, you’re a punk ass bitch.

~~ One of my former students is starting a blog. Nobody made him do it. He’s asking for my help because he wants to learn, not because someone is giving him a grade. This makes me inexpressibly happy.

~~ Everyone should scroll down to the very bottom of blurbomat and read the fine print. I think that’s pretty funny.

~~ I’m being pretty bossy today!

I’d be interested in ONE, only ONE, recommendation about who, in your opinion [keeping in mind, you know, that I’m Taylor] is bringin it like Pac did, for good reasons like Pac did, but are talking about things that are more current NOW.

The only hip-hop music I have recorded after 2000 is Ice Cube’s “Laugh Now, Cry Later” and that really doesn’t count since I’ve been listening to him since the early 90s. He’s not really new to me.

What do you think, roc? I like stuff that’s political like Ice Cube or Tupac, or NWA, [I know, I know, public enemy is more political than all those, but that was a bit before my hip-hop time. I should look for a PE greatest hits] or smooth like Tupac, or fun like Eminem. I like music that has something real to say.

Forget a greatest hit compo; get these two PE albums:

“It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back”
    “Fear of a Black Planet”

Two of the most seminal albums, not only in hip-hop, but also to American music in general.
