Your dad just tweeted that you were born. I smiled and laughed so much my cheeks hurt. I know that’s weird because I’ve never met your dad in person, but I’m really excited for him and for you.

Then @kolsen29 said your dad should keep a record of his tweet for the baby book. I suddenly wanted to do it for him. I thought it would be fun to make you something for your baby book.

So here it is:

Kiera’s first moments in the social network:

Garageflowers

I tried to think of what I could say to you, but I doubt I could say anything that would still be relevant to you by the time you’re old enough to care. ~you’re not missing much. i’m pretty much clueless.~ So I’ll just say this:

You have to think for yourself. There are no substitutes or easy ways out. There will be people who will seem to offer alternatives, and sometimes you’ll want to be lazy and shirk the mental work. We all do that. It’s a lot easier in the long run to know your own mind than to waste time following people who have no clue what they’re doing. Trust me.

Also, your dad really is one of the good guys. ~as far as I know, but you can never be too careful. never trust a man you meet online!~ There will be times when you won’t think so. We all do that. Learn to assert your independence without severing important, life-giving ties.

One more thing: Kiera, you do not have permission to give up on yourself. You have permission to fail, to cry, to hurt when you need to. No matter how much other people pretend, they have their hurts too. You will feel hurt and failure. We all do that. Don’t let those moments define you. It’s really true that the people who don’t give up, win.

Okay, so I had more to say than I thought, but you should probably forget everything I said since I’m far from having it together. But most people, in my experience ~world I invented in my head~ don’t have it together either, they’re just good at hiding it.

Anyway.

Kiera, it’s gonna be good!

    Kiera -
The fact that you have a blogging doll named Taylor the teacher welcoming you into the world with a blog post inspired by twitter is just so amazing I can’t describe it. It’s 2008 and this is cutting edge - twitter is still new and blogs aren’t dead. Teachers care enough to blog about their experiences, good and bad. Your dad loves you enough to tweet and blog about you and is a cool enough person to have people from all over the world responding. We will probably never meet you (or your dad), but the fact that all of this is possible still blows my mind. I can’t even imagine what the world will be like when you’re my age (27), but I’m sure what I’m saying here will be hilariously old-fashioned. In your journey, just never lose sight of YOU.

Welcome, Kiera! Taylor says you can trust her, and as her friend I can vouch for her. So don’t trust a man you meet online, but trust a Taylor. =)

You make me laugh, Taylor. You are a good friend, and an excellent teacher. :D *hugs* Anyway, about the mother thing, you give better motivational speeches than my mother. So, no kids for the Teacher?

Just taking a breather from daddy duty to offer special thanks for a beautifully written post. I hope I can reinforce your advice over the coming years.

This was very sweet, and means a lot to me (and will to her, I’m sure). This post will be one of Kiera’s first bedtime stories once she and mom come home. Ain’t the Interweb a beautiful thing? Thank you!

(and yes, I’ve done screen caps of this post and all the 60+ well-wishing Tweets that came in after the announcement for her digital scrapbook!)

@Damian I’m so glad you liked it. I enjoyed writing this post more than any in a while, and I meant what I said. SSOOOOOOOO excited for you. Weird for a girl that doesn’t want any kids!

Take care of yourself and yours, you’ll need your strength.

@Kealie No kids for me unless you can think of a way to come up with a quick hundred K to pay off my UNGODLY student loans.

@ken identical twins!? absolutely. I was thinking of what I could say to your twins while I was writing this one. As for therapy for the haggard parent of ?? how many ?? I have no idea…. why do you think I have no children?

Also, ken, you’ll have to twitter more often! When are your babies due?

March 30th, but odds are they will drop like Tic-Tacs in the early portion of aforementioned month.

When will they find the genomes for cloning these qualities….?

Another brilliant post. I’m really enjoying and relating to your ‘realism’…..
