Read this post by New York City Educator. Here’s my favorite part:

And what teachers need to know is this–don’t ask questions at department meetings. It just makes them longer, and we all have better things to do. Perhaps there are worthwhile meetings out there somewhere, but 99% of the meetings I’ve been to have been time-wasters.

Then live it.

I admit I was the WORLD’S WORST question-asking Wetbehindtheears teacher.

I was wroooonnnnnggg for that.

Oh yes! Someone actually said the unspoken rule. Keep your mouth shut so we can get out of here. Unfortunately, some of older teachers do the same. If only they knew the rules.

Thanks for the kind mention. But having read you for a while now, I simply can’t imagine you asking stupid questions or making outlandish suggestions.

Oh, I was forever doing that. Seriously. But I learned that I never got anything but eye-rolls from the other teachers. Now I just write notes during meetings (and read Star Wars books, and read articles, and surf the web on my cell phone) and ask later.

Usually, I can figure out whatever I need to know. Most often, it doesn’t matter anyway because no matter what they’re saying, it’s just blowing smoke anyway and never really happens. The rest I can get more common sensically from a colleague, just like you said.

    PS is “sensically” a word?

probably not, but who cares? and secondly, I never asked those dumb questions. I tried my best to fit in with the vets, so people couldn’t tell between me and an old teacher if they just walked into the building.
