Today Mr. Anderson came to my room and asked me for my binder of film curriculum so he can xerox it. This is stuff that I wrote in college. Stuff that I took seriously and created when nobody would let me teach it. There’s much more in that binder than I used this year in that school. I consider it a work in progress. A passion.
I asked for that class for four years before I got it, and nobody ever was willing to LOOK at what I had brought written in making the decision. The fact that I had been preparing for the class meant nothing. These decisions are always either logistical, political, or arbitrary.
I was deliberately given classes I didn’t want and moved to the middle of nowhere in an attempt to freeze me out. When I was finally allowed to teach film, it was a last-ditch effort to keep me in a bad situation. ~after they had decided i was brought down sufficiently low to be worth keeping~
It took them five years to recognize that I had something to offer and now they want to run me out of the profession in tears while they xerox my work?
And they want me to DIG THROUGH A TON OF BOXES to give it to them?
Right.

Just reading your blog makes me feel used. I’m sorry you’ve been forced to experience this.

Tell him that when you’re ready, you’ll put it all online and he can Google for it like everyone else. I mean, it can only be yours to keep or share at your discretion - is there an implication that the school has a right to your resource?

I have to agree with Jose. That’s really, really NOT right, like at all. It’s frustrating to read, and I can’t imagine how it must be for you.

i can’t believe he had the nerve. that just says everything about Those Assholes. they view us as something less than human - something to be coerced, manipulated, and used to the point we become irreparable. become recalcitrant or simply burn out and you’re gonna get crushed. but not before they ask for your damn binder!

Well, my whole life and classroom are in boxes anyway, and I don’t have time to look for the binder.
Why is my stuff in boxes?
Oh, that would be because working there made me so miserable I had to bolt.

Oh that is just wrong.
You owe them nothing but a great big ” Bye Y’all” as you pull out of the staff parking lot.
Smile and don’t look back.

I like that phrase — smile and don’t look back. I’m gonna remember that the next couple of weeks.
